How to crate train a puppy
Crate training works when the crate means good things and is sized right. Rushed or punitive crating backfires โ patience wins.
Size and place it right
Use a divider so the space is just big enough to stand, turn, and lie down. Put the crate in a calm spot where the family is nearby, not isolated.
Build positive associations
Feed meals and toss treats inside. Let the puppy explore with the door open before ever closing it. Never use the crate as punishment.
Go slow with the door
Close it for seconds, then minutes, building up. Pair alone-time with a stuffed chew. Keep first stays short and successful.
